Trash Collection Guidelines:
All residents should have received a New 96- Gallon Trash container. If you have not received your container, need a smaller can or would like to purchase an additional container, please call the township. Additional containers will be available after April 2026.
Old trash containers can be disposed of on the bulk pickup day. Residents can also drop off old trash bins at the Public Works building for disposal or repurpose them for yard waste. If residents choose to use old containers for yard waste, please visit the township building to pick up a yard waste sticker that should be placed on the container.
Residents will continue to use the current recycling containers and will only receive new TRASH bins
To ensure that your curbside materials will be collected, place trash curbside the night before, but no earlier than 6:00 p.m. Trucks will not return for materials placed curbside if the trucks have already passed.
- All materials must be placed in the Township-provided bins
- All containers must be placed at the edge of the curb, not in the street.
- Trash cans must be 3 feet clear of any obstruction, with the front side of the can facing the street, with the lid closed. This means that the wheels and handle should face toward the house. If you move from your residence, please place the bin inside a garage or a secure area for the next resident's use. The Township is the owner of the container.
- Containers should have the lids closed to prevent water or other debris from entering the container. The Township is charged by the amount of tonnage, which in turn determines trash fees.
- All empty containers must be removed from the curb on the same day as collection.
- Collection regulations will be strictly enforced and violators are subjects to fines and penalties.
- Discarded carpeting must be sliced into three (3) foot sections, then rolled and tied into a bundle weighing less than 50 pounds. If the carpet cannot fit in the trash can, it can be picked up with bulk collection.
- Some items not collected curbside include hazardous waste, building materials, concrete, dirt, stones, tires, batteries and automotive parts. See below for hazardous waste disposal sites.
- Regulations on size and weight will be strictly enforced and all violations will result in applicable fines set out by Township Code.
Recycling Collection Guidelines:
- Residents must use the 64-gallon recycling toter provided by the Township. Toters must be 3 feet clear of any obstruction with the front side of the toter facing the street with the lid closed. This means that the wheels and handle should face toward the house. If you move from your residence, please place the toter inside of garage or a secure area for next resident's use. The Township is the owner of the toter.
- Single Stream Recycling: materials include newspapers, inserts, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, paperback books, phone books, cardboard, pizza boxes cut into 12 inch squares, office and school papers, colored paper, boxboard, paper egg cartons, paper bags (grocery type), aluminum cans, clean foil, tin and steel aerosol cans (empty), clean glass jars and bottles and all plastic containers labeled 1-7. Please note that some types of #6 recyclables cannot be accepted, such as Styrofoam or other "foamed polystyrene" plastics. "Non-foamed polystyrene" plastics, such as butter and yogurt containers can be recycled. Please remember all containers should be empty and clean. Sort smarter- learn about what you can and cannot recycle.
Household Hazardous Waste
Montgomery County hosts a variety of Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events each year. For the collection schedule and details of acceptable material, visit the County Household Hazardous website.
SHARPS/SYRINGES: According the Montgomery County Guidelines on how to properly dispose, "Sharps or syringes are not considered household hazardous waste and should be disposed of with regular trash pick up. Sharps should be placed in a puncture-resistant hard plastic or metal container. Container should be sealed and placed in a securely fastened opaque trash bag. It is also recommended to disinfect sharps with a solution of one teaspoon of bleach in a half gallon of water. Please do not recycle sharps. See the Disposal Tips brochure for more information."
Commercial Refuse and Recycling Regulations
Refuse generated from the operation of any commercial enterprise, including businesses, institutional uses, schools, or apartment complexes consisting of four or more units, must arrange for the collection of all refuse and recyclable materials via a licensed hauler. All commercial enterprises are required to establish recycling programs for paper, corrugated cardboard, aluminum containers and leaf waste.
The aforementioned materials represent the minimum recycling requirements established by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Lower Moreland Township encourages all commercial enterprises to expand their recycling programs wherever feasible to include glass containers, plastics, and other recyclable materials. Click here for guidelines on mandatory commercial, institutional and municipal recycling.
Yard Waste Collection
Monday or Tuesday
All yard waste is collected by the Township from April through January.
- Wards 1,2,3 will receive service on Mondays
- Wards 4,5,6 will receive service on Tuesdays
- Yard waste and leaves must be placed in a biodegradable bag or container up to 32 gallons, not exceeding 40 lbs. This container must have holes drilled in the bottom and have a designated yard waste collection sticker. Stickers can be obtained at no cost, and bags are available for purchase at the Township Building.
- Tree limbs placed curbside may not exceed a diameter of 2 inches, a length of 36 inches and the bundles may not weigh more than 50 pounds. Bundles must be cut into 3-foot sections and tied with manila rope or jute twine.
- Containers, bags and/or bundles shall be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM on the morning of scheduled collection, and no earlier than 6:00 PM on evening before scheduled collection day. Bags must be stored on the property in compliance with the Property Maintenance Code. If yard waste collection day falls on a holiday, it will be picked up on the next regular work day.
Act 101 of 1988 mandates recycling in Pennsylvania and requires municipalities to develop municipal waste management plans with an overall goal of reducing municipal waste generation. The Act stipulates that communities need to separate leaf waste for collection from household waste disposal.
There will be curbside yard waste collections during the first three Mondays in January. Regular curbside collection will resume the first week in April. As a reminder, residents can drop off yard waste by appointment at the Public Works facility for the months of February and March.

To obtain a sticker, stop by the township building no later than 3:00PM on the Wednesday before the Monday pickup.
