In 2014, Lower Moreland Township received a $25,000 grant from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission to fund a Feasibility Study for the Bethayres Streetscape Plan. A Steering Committee, consisting of elected officials, members of the Planning Commission and local business owners, met to discuss and provide comments on the streetscape plan. Additional feedback was also provided from the Township's Planner, Rettew Associates, Township staff and from the public.
The Feasibility Study sets the stage for physical improvements to the pedestrian and landscape features along Huntingdon Pike beginning at Buck Road at the south end of the Bryn Athyn College campus and extending down to the Bethayres SEPTA train station.
To address connectivity and walkability while cultivating a downtown that residents and visitors alike can enjoy, the Bethayres Streetscape Plan proposes the following goals:
• Access to Public Transportation: This project will provide for safer and improved access to SEPTA's Bethayres Train Station. New sidewalk connections and a crosswalk will be installed at Huntingdon Pike and Chestnut Street to allow pedestrians the opportunity to safely cross the street to get to the train station or nearby retail stores.
• Streetscape Improvements: 4-6' wide sidewalks, stamped brick crosswalks, art features, ADA curb ramps, attractive street lighting and landscaping.
• Mobility: The plan will enhance mobility by better utilizing existing public transportation along the corridor, providing commercial connections for residents and visitors, access for bikers, horseback riders and pedestrians to Montgomery County's Pennypack Trail and adding a new sidewalk connection to neighboring municipality Bryn Athyn Borough.
• Economic Growth: Our streetscape plan aims to promote economic growth and revitalization in the downtown Bethayres corridor. Increasing the area's aesthetic appeal and providing pedestrian friendly sidewalks along Huntingdon Pike will attract more customers to the businesses that operate in this area. An increase in economic activity for these businesses will in turn provide more job opportunities in our municipality.
